Hi, Dr Linda here from Dental House Group in Melbourne.
Veneers can give you a stunning smile, but just like natural teeth, they need proper care to stay in top condition. Most people know the basics: brushing, flossing, and regular check-ups, but today, I want to share five little-known tips to help your veneers last even longer.
Tip #1: Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and non-abrasive toothpaste. Veneers are incredibly strong; however, using a harsh toothpaste or a hard-bristled brush can wear down the polish over time, making them lose their natural shine. Stick to gentle products to keep them looking fresh.
Tip #2: Wear a nightguard if you grind your teeth. Even if you don’t think you grind your teeth, it’s worth checking. Grinding, especially while sleeping, can put excess pressure on your veneers, leading to chips or cracks. A custom nightguard can protect them while you sleep.
Tip #3: Avoid biting into hard foods and objects. Ice cubes, hard candy, and even using your teeth to open packaging can weaken the bond of your veneers. Always be mindful of what you are biting into; your smile will thank you.
Tip #4: Keep up with your regular dental check-ups. Veneers do not decay, but the natural teeth underneath them do. Routine check-ups help ensure your teeth and gums stay healthy, keeping your veneers in place for the long run.
Tip #5: Be mindful of staining foods and drinks. While porcelain veneers resist staining, your natural teeth do not. Over time, excessive coffee, tea, or red wine consumption can create a colour mismatch. Using a straw or rinsing with water after drinking staining beverages can help prevent this to some extent.
As you know, veneers are an investment in your smile, and with the right care, they can last well over a decade. If you want to ensure yours stay in top shape, simply DM us or call 1800 GENTLE to book a check-up; we are here to help you protect your perfect smile.
