Invisalign Melbourne

Exploring Invisalign in Melbourne’s north-west? At Dental House Group, our experienced teams across six locations assess each patient individually before recommending clear aligner treatment, using established Invisalign technology for patients with genuine alignment concerns.

When Tooth Alignment Affects More Than Appearance

Crowded or misaligned teeth aren’t just an aesthetic issue. They can make it harder to clean between teeth properly, put uneven pressure on the jaw, and in some cases affect how comfortably you chew. At Dental House Group, we’ve been helping families across Melbourne’s north-west work through orthodontic decisions for nearly 40 years. Invisalign suits mild to moderate alignment concerns well, but it’s not the right fit for every case, and we’ll tell you honestly whether it’s the right option for yours.

Understanding Invisalign

Invisalign works through a series of custom-made clear aligners, each one moving your teeth a small amount further along a planned sequence. They’re removable, which means you take them out to eat, drink anything other than water, and clean your teeth. Each set is typically worn for one to two weeks before progressing to the next.

The treatment starts with a digital scan of your teeth, which feeds into computer software that maps out the full sequence of movements before a single aligner is made. That planned sequence is what gets manufactured into your aligner series. How well treatment goes depends heavily on compliance: aligners need to be worn 20-22 hours a day for the plan to stay on track. Case complexity and individual factors also influence the outcome. Results vary between patients.

Could Invisalign Be Right for You?

Clear aligner treatment isn't suitable for every alignment concern, and a proper assessment comes before any recommendation. Here's what generally needs to be in place.

You Have Mild to Moderate Alignment Issues

Your concerns fall within the range that clear aligners can address effectively. More complex alignment or bite issues may be better suited to fixed braces or other orthodontic approaches, which we'll discuss if that's the case.

You Can Commit to Daily Aligner Wear

Twenty to twenty-two hours a day is the minimum for treatment to progress as planned. That's a real commitment, and being honest with yourself about whether you can stick to it matters before you start.

You Have Realistic Treatment Expectations

Duration varies depending on the complexity of the case and how consistently aligners are worn. Understanding what Invisalign can achieve, what it can't, and what's involved day to day is part of making a decision you'll be comfortable with long term.

Your Invisalign Journey, Step by Step

Treatment length varies based on what needs to move and how well the plan is followed. Here's how the process typically unfolds.

Your Comprehensive Orthodontic Assessment

A thorough look at your teeth, bite, and gum health using digital scans, X-rays, and photographs to work out whether Invisalign is appropriate for your situation and what treatment would involve.
(1 visit, approximately 60-90 minutes)

Digital Treatment Planning

Your tooth movements are mapped out using Invisalign's planning software, producing a digital sequence showing how your teeth are expected to shift across the treatment.
(1-2 weeks for planning, followed by a plan review appointment)

Custom Aligner Fabrication

Once the treatment plan is approved, your full series of aligners is manufactured to the exact specifications of your plan.
(2-3 weeks fabrication time after plan approval)

Aligner Series Delivery and Instructions

You collect your first sets of aligners and get a clear rundown of how to wear them, how to clean them, and how to progress through the series.
(1 visit, approximately 45-60 minutes)

Regular Progress Monitoring

Check-ups every 6-10 weeks let your dentist track how your teeth are moving, deal with any issues that come up, and hand over the next sets of aligners.
(Multiple visits throughout treatment, approximately 30-45 minutes each)

Retention Phase

When active treatment wraps up, retainers are fitted to hold your teeth in their new positions. This part of treatment is ongoing and just as important as the aligners themselves.
(Final appointment plus retainer delivery, ongoing retention management)

Risks & Recovery

Invisalign is a well-established orthodontic option, but like any treatment it comes with things worth knowing upfront.

Possible risks include:

  • Pressure and mild discomfort when moving to a new set of aligners, which typically settles within a day or two
  • Some irritation to the lips, cheeks, or tongue as the mouth adjusts to wearing aligners
  • Temporary changes to speech in the early weeks, which usually resolves quickly
  • Increased cavity risk if aligners aren’t cleaned properly and oral hygiene slips during treatment

Recovery considerations:

  • Most people adapt to wearing aligners within the first few days
  • Because they’re removable, eating and cleaning remain straightforward throughout treatment
  • Sticking to 20-22 hours of daily wear is what keeps the treatment timeline on track
  • Regular check-ups are where your dentist can catch anything that needs adjusting before it affects the outcome

Any questions?

It depends on the case. Simpler alignment issues can be sorted in six months; more involved cases can take closer to two years. Your dentist will give you a realistic estimate at your assessment once they’ve looked at your teeth properly. What we won’t do is give you a number before we’ve actually assessed you.

The short answer is that treatment stalls. Teeth need consistent pressure to move through the planned sequence, and gaps in wear time throw that off. Extended treatment, additional aligners, or revised planning can all result from poor compliance. It’s worth being honest with yourself about this before you start.

Yes. Teeth have a natural tendency to drift back toward where they started, and retainers are what prevent that. Some form of retention is typically needed long term, though exactly what that looks like varies. Your dentist will discuss the options when you’re approaching the end of active treatment.
