Tooth Restoration Melbourne
Looking to repair a damaged or decayed tooth in Melbourne’s north-west? At Dental House Group, our experienced teams across six locations assess each situation carefully and recommend the most appropriate restoration for your tooth, your bite, and your long-term oral health.
When Your Teeth Need Comprehensive Repair
Teeth don’t always fail dramatically. Sometimes it’s a crack that’s been there for years, a filling that’s finally given up, or decay that’s quietly worked its way deeper than expected. Whatever the cause, a tooth that’s lost significant structure needs attention before the damage compounds. At Dental House Group, we’ve been helping families across Melbourne’s north-west sort out exactly these kinds of problems for nearly 40 years. The earlier we can step in, the more of the natural tooth we can usually save.
Understanding Tooth Restoration
Tooth restoration covers the full range of treatments designed to repair what decay, trauma, or wear has taken away. That includes direct restorations placed in a single visit, like composite fillings, and indirect restorations fabricated in a laboratory, like crowns, inlays, onlays, and ceramic veneers. Between those two ends of the spectrum, there’s a lot of middle ground, and the right approach depends on how much tooth remains, where it sits in the mouth, and what it needs to do.
The process always involves removing what’s damaged and replacing it with a material suited to the situation, whether that’s composite resin, porcelain, or something else entirely. The goal is to preserve as much natural tooth as possible while restoring it to proper function. Treatment selection is based on the individual tooth, and outcomes vary between patients.
Could Tooth Restoration Be Right for You?
Restoration treatment covers a wide range of situations, and each one needs its own assessment. Here's what generally needs to be in place.
Your Restoration Journey, Step by Step
How long the process takes depends on whether a direct or indirect restoration is needed and the complexity of the case. Here's what to expect.

Your Comprehensive Assessment
A thorough examination with digital X-rays to understand the full extent of the damage, work out what type of restoration makes the most sense, and talk through your options clearly.
(1-2 visits, approximately 60-90 minutes each)

Treatment Planning and Foundation Preparation
Any underlying problems are dealt with first. Your restoration plan is built around what the tooth needs, not just what's quickest.
(Planning completed during assessment or follow-up visit)

Tooth Preparation and Decay Removal
The damaged material is removed and the tooth shaped to receive the restoration. Local anaesthesia keeps you comfortable throughout.
(1 visit for direct restorations, or first visit for indirect, approximately 60-120 minutes)

Restoration Placement or Impression Taking
For direct restorations, the material goes straight in. For indirect, we take detailed impressions and place a temporary restoration while the lab does its work.
(Same visit for direct, or with a 2-3 week laboratory period for indirect restorations)

Laboratory Fabrication (Indirect Restorations Only)
Skilled dental technicians craft your custom restoration using quality materials, matched precisely to your tooth's shape, size, and colour.
(Typically 2-3 weeks between appointments)

Final Restoration Fitting
Your permanent restoration is tried in, checked for fit and bite comfort, fine-tuned as needed, and cemented or bonded into place.
(1 visit, approximately 60-90 minutes for indirect restorations)
Risks & Recovery
Tooth restoration is one of the most common things we do, but there are still things worth knowing before you start.
Possible risks include:
- Some temperature or pressure sensitivity in the days after placement
- Mild gum irritation around the edges of the restoration
- Wear, fracture, or loosening over time, particularly under heavy biting forces
- In some cases, if the tooth is more compromised than imaging revealed, a crown or root canal may be needed
Recovery considerations:
- Most people are back to normal straight after the appointment
- Sensitivity typically settles within a few days without any intervention
- Being careful with very hard or sticky foods in the early days is sensible
- Keeping up with check-ups means we can catch any issues with the restoration before they become a real problem

Any questions?

What’s the difference between direct and indirect restorations?
A direct restoration, like a filling, is placed and completed in the chair in one visit. An indirect restoration, like a crown or inlay, is custom-made in a laboratory and fitted at a second appointment. Which approach is right depends on how much tooth structure remains and what the tooth needs to handle functionally. Your dentist will walk you through the options at your assessment.
How long do tooth restorations typically last?
There’s no single answer because it depends on the material, the location, your bite, and how consistently you look after your teeth. What we do know is that regular check-ups make a real difference, since we can pick up early wear or changes in the restoration before they turn into something that needs redoing entirely.
Will my restored tooth feel different?
Quite possibly at first. A new surface and slightly altered shape can take a bit of getting used to. Most people stop noticing within a few days to a week. If the bite feels off or discomfort continues beyond that, come back and we’ll adjust it. Getting the bite right is important and we’re happy to fine-tune it.
