Dental Anxiety Melbourne at Melbourne

Dental Anxiety Melbourne - Melbourne - Melbourne Dental House

Dental anxiety is a common condition that may cause some people to avoid the dentist altogether. This can result in poor dental habits and oral health issues, which can lead to dental problems that result in loss of teeth or more serious health problems that may lead to hospitalisation. Our team of gentle and compassionate professionals at the Dental House are here to help you work through your anxiety and fear. Modern techniques allow us to provide a relatively minimal discomfort and stress-free procedure whether you need a simple teeth cleaning or a root canal.

What is Dental Anxiety?

If you are afraid of the dentist, you’re not alone. Most people who avoid the dentist do so because of a level of fear stemming from a number of different reasons. Dental anxiety is characterised by feelings of anxiety or stress that results in delayed dental visits. It may be triggered by the dental setting, needles or equipment commonly used by a dentist. When serious, dental anxiety may become dental phobia, or what some refer to as Dentophobia or Odontophobia. Dental anxiety may affect someone physically and may be displayed as:

Visible distress such as panic attack or crying

Sweating

Rapid heartbeat

Low blood pressure, which may lead to fainting

Shallow, rapid breathing

Stress Free Sedation and Sleep Dentistry

Each patient has different needs, and at the Dental House, we will work with you to find the best technique to ensure you have a comfortable experience. If you experience dental anxiety, some at-home techniques may help ease your fear before your visit, such as:

Meditation

Deep breathing exercises

Muscle relaxation practice
Hypnosis
Of course, these methods are not proven for dental anxiety, but can be used as a preliminary to help you relax a little before you come in. To serve you better, we offer quick and proven anxiety relief, and will do our best to provide you with the most positive dental experience possible. One method we use is sedation dentistry to help ease anxiety so you can relax before and during your visit. Some sedation techniques available include:

Oral Medications

Medications may be provided that help ease you into a state of deep relaxation before the procedure begins. In some cases, we may prescribe medication before your visit, avoiding much of the stress when you arrive.

Nitrous Oxide

Nitrous oxide is also called happy gas, and is administered with oxygen before and during the treatment, resulting in a stress-free dental visit. Once the procedure is complete, the oxygen mask is removed for a quick recovery.

Conscious Sedation

During your dental exam, a medication may be administered allowing you to remain semi-awake; in a sedated state where you drift in and out of sleep. This technique is reserved for those with more extreme anxiety and fears.

Sleep Dentistry

This is a solution for those who are extremely fearful or phobic, and undergoing extensive procedures or more intensive procedures like root canals or dental implants.

Individual Solutions

While we offer many solutions for pain and stress-free dentistry, most procedures can be done with minimal levels of sedation. Technology has come a long way, and we use it to ensure you have a positive experience with the best outcome. Our goal is for you to walk out feeling your appointment went extremely well and the dentist is nothing to fear.
