When You Need Help Today

A knocked-out tooth, severe toothache, or facial swelling won’t wait, and neither should you. At Dental House Group, Melbourne’s Home of Gentle Dentistry, we’ve been looking after our community for nearly 40 years. Call us on 1800 GENTLE (1800 436 853) and we’ll get you seen.

Understanding Emergency Dentistry

Emergency dentistry covers urgent treatment for dental trauma, severe pain, infection, and conditions that genuinely can’t wait for a routine appointment. Common presentations include knocked-out or broken teeth, severe toothache, facial swelling, abscesses, jaw injuries, and uncontrolled bleeding following trauma.

In many emergency situations, what happens in the first few minutes matters. How a knocked-out tooth is handled before you reach us, or how bleeding is managed after an injury, can influence what treatment is possible when you arrive. We’ll walk you through what to do when you call. Individual emergencies vary considerably in severity and what they involve.

Is This a Dental Emergency?

Dental emergencies cover everything from acute trauma to rapidly spreading infection. Here's what generally warrants same-day contact.

Severe Pain or Dental Trauma

Pain that stops you eating, sleeping, or getting through the day normally, or a tooth that has been knocked out, cracked, or significantly damaged, needs urgent professional assessment. Don't wait to see if it settles.

Facial Swelling or Uncontrolled Bleeding

Swelling around the jaw, cheek, or neck can signal an infection that's spreading beyond the tooth. Uncontrolled bleeding from the mouth after an injury or a recent procedure also needs to be seen the same day.

Signs of Dental Infection

Throbbing pain, fever, pus, or swelling that's getting worse are all signs that infection may be progressing. Dental infections can spread quickly and should not be left to resolve on their own.

Risks and Recovery

Emergency dental treatment addresses urgent problems quickly, but like all dental procedures it carries risks and recovery considerations worth understanding.

Possible risks include:

  • Post-treatment pain or sensitivity depending on the procedure performed
  • Risk of infection if post-operative care instructions aren’t followed carefully
  • In trauma cases, the long-term prognosis for affected teeth depends on the nature and severity of the injury
  • Some emergency situations require referral for hospital-level or more involved treatment

Recovery considerations:

  • Recovery varies considerably based on what was done at the emergency visit
  • Specific aftercare instructions are provided at your appointment and should be followed closely
  • Follow-up visits matter; they’re how we monitor healing and complete any treatment that couldn’t be finished on the day
  • Getting professional attention promptly generally supports better outcomes than waiting

Any questions?

Severe pain stopping you from functioning normally, a knocked-out or badly broken tooth, facial swelling, uncontrolled bleeding, or signs of spreading infection all warrant same-day contact. If you’re unsure whether your situation is urgent, call us and we’ll help you work that out.

Same-day appointments are available when you contact us before 12pm Monday to Friday. Weekend situations are seen first thing Monday morning. Where a situation requires immediate hospital-level care, we’ll advise you and refer accordingly.

Pick it up by the crown only, not the root. Don’t scrub or rinse it with tap water. Keep it moist by storing it in milk or gently holding it against the inside of your cheek, then call us straight away. Time is a significant factor with a knocked-out tooth, and the sooner you reach us the more options are available.
