Last week, a new patient, Jules from Taylors Lakes who was referred to us by one of our other patients, came in for a dental consultation. She has some teeth that are too short due to teeth grinding and learned that we could help lengthen her teeth with dental veneers.

During her smile consultation, she brought up a common concern that we hear from many patients, “Is the veneer procedure painful?”

Since this is a concern of so many cosmetic patients, I wanted to make a video about it to help explain the process and hopefully, put your concerns at ease.

I would first like to explain that dental veneers are a great solution to fix teeth that are worn down by bruxism, as well as teeth that are cracked, chipped, broken, and discoloured. Veneers can restore teeth to their natural beauty and help crooked teeth fit in with the rest of your teeth. They can also protect damaged teeth from further damage.

Veneers are used by many patients for smile makeovers. For many patients, they are a convenient and effective solution to restore or upgrade a smile.

With that being said, if you would like to know if the procedure is painful, and the answer is no. While some teeth may feel sensitive for a few days up to two weeks after getting veneers placed, this subsides quickly as they recover and the veneers protect the tooth enamel from further damage. Patients who feel sensitive right after the procedure find relief with over-the-counter pain relievers, as well as rinsing with warm saltwater. It is very rare that anyone needs more than this.

During the procedure of getting dental veneers, your teeth will be prepared so that the veneers and the bonding will hold longer and stronger. Preparing your tooth for a dental veneer means shaving just a tiny layer of enamel off the surface, from just 0.3 to 0.5 millimetres. This is so thin there is often little to no pain for the patient and requires no more than a local anaesthetic.

Once your veneers are placed onto your teeth, there are some precautions. You should avoid biting hard items like nails, pens or chewing on ice. If you do eat hard or very crunchy foods, use your side molars to bite to protect your veneers. Brushing and flossing twice each day is also very important to keep your veneers and the rest of your teeth clean. Remember while porcelain veneers are resistant to staining, your natural teeth are not.
