What Are The Different Types of Sedation We Offer?

Hi, Dr Linda here from Dental House Group in Melbourne.

If the thought of a dental visit makes you nervous, you’re not alone. Many patients put off treatment due to anxiety, which is why sleep dentistry can be a game changer. But not all sedation options are the same, so let’s go through the different types and how they can help you feel more at ease.

The mildest form of sedation is oral sedation, which involves taking a prescribed anti-anxiety tablet before your appointment. It won’t put you to sleep, but it helps you feel calm and more at ease during your procedure.

Then there’s happy gas, also known as nitrous oxide. This is a great option for patients who feel a bit anxious but want to remain fully awake. The gas is inhaled through a mask, giving you a sense of calm, and the best part? The effects wear off quickly, so you can get back to your day without any downtime.

For deeper relaxation, we offer IV sedation, also called twilight sedation. This is administered through a drip by a qualified sedationist. While you won’t be completely unconscious, you’ll feel like you’re drifting in and out of sleep. Most patients don’t even remember the procedure. It’s perfect for longer treatments or if you prefer not to feel or hear anything during your appointment.

And finally, for those who need to be fully asleep, we offer general anaesthesia. At Dental House Group, we have a purpose-built general anaesthesia facility on-site, so you can undergo treatment in a controlled and comfortable environment. This is ideal for complex dental work, severe anxiety, or patients with a strong gag reflex.

Whether you need help managing dental anxiety or simply want a more relaxing experience, there’s a sedation option to keep you comfortable and safe. If you’d like to learn more about sleep dentistry and which type is best for you, simply DM us or call us at 1800 GENTLE to chat with our team.
