What do you cover in your Comprehensive Examination?
Are you looking for a new dentist to look after you and your family? In this 10 part: Interview Questions for Your New Dentist series, we will go through questions you should be asking your new dentist before going ahead with them.
In today’s video, we will go through the question: What do you cover in your comprehensive examination?
A comprehensive dentist screens for more than just tooth decay. He or she should be concerned about your medical histories such as diabetes, hypertension, osteoporosis and any medication you are taking, any sleeping disorder known as sleep apnea, any jaw-related issues known as TMJ, any gum infection or oral cancer.
Let’s go through each of them ones by one…
Medical History
Many medication and medical conditions have a direct impact on your oral health. A very common side effect of mediations is dry mouth. Dry mouth can increase all risk of tooth decay, tooth wear and gum disease. It is important for us to know about your medical history so we can provide the best care possible.
Sleep Apnea
Just by asking questions about snoring, weight gain, or medications such as acid reflux drugs can give us clues about sleep apnea. Do you know 9% of women and 25% of men in Australia suffer from sleep apnea?
Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ)
Did you know shoulder pain, neck pain and migraine can be related to the position of your jaw? We feel your jaw joint and ask about any pain, tightness or discomfort you may be having.
Gum Disease
With knowing what your gum condition is, we can possibly detect any early indications of heart disease, stroke and diabetes.
Oral Cancer
The rate of people being diagnosed with oral cancer has increased by as much as 60% over the last 10 years. By looking for early warnings like mouth sores, white or red patches, or any bumps and lumps in or outside your mouth can help us in early detection of oral cancer.
Here at Dental House Group, during your comprehensive examination, we go through all the items we just discussed because we value your health and wellbeing, not just your teeth.
