What Is The Process Of Dental Implant?

Hi my name is Dr Fong from the Dental House Group.

This morning, we just placed 4 dental implants successfully into one of our patients’ Helen’s mouth. She was so happy with the results! She said, ‘Wow… the process is so quick and smooth, I should have had this done earlier!’. I was so pleased about her results, and I know so many more people can benefit from dental implants, so I thought I would make a short video explaining the process of dental implants, just in case you have been thinking about this procedure.

About 10 million dental implants are placed each year around the world and the numbers are growing quickly. This is due to the advance in medical research, material and trained Dentists around the world.

Dental implants are made from a super strong but light material, titanium, and are used to replace the root of one or more missing teeth. Single tooth, bridge or denture are later attached to the dental implants to replace what’s missing in your mouth.

So what does a dental implant procedure involve?

  • The first step is implant placement planning and the construction of a surgical guide. No plan is equal to a plan to fail. We will take a digital 3D scan of your jaw and a digital impression of your teeth and soft tissue. This way, we can accurately assess the implant site without any other invasive test. We plan the position of your final restoration and your smile before we plan the implants position. We plan the construction before we plan the foundation. After all, we are replacing your missing teeth. A guide is then made to accurately bring this position into the mouth, making the surgery more accurate and quicker.
  • After the planning, the next step is the placement of implants. With the surgical guide, your implants will be placed into the jaw. One to multiple implants can be placed at the same time during the surgery. Often this process is like having a filling done. You will be numbed up properly, you may have some swelling or discomfort after the procedure, but don’t worry, we will prescribe some medication to help.
  • Once the implant is placed, then we will go through the healing process. The reason why implants are so strong is that our jawbones heal, grow around and hold them in place. This can take a few months and often we will advise you to eat soft food. In some cases, a temporary tooth or bridge can be placed during this healing process to help you eat, speak and smile.
  • Once the implant is completely integrated with your jaw bone, the final step is the restoration of the tooth. After healing, a single crown, bridge or denture is constructed to replace the missing tooth or teeth as planned. Often a new digital impression will be taken and construction of the new tooth or teeth will take place.

Once this is custom-made for you, we will replace the temporary crown with this permanent custom porcelain crown, bridge or denture, so you can eat, speak and smile with confidence again.
