What To Expect After I Wake Up From General Anesthesia?

Hi, Dr Fong here from Dental House Group in Melbourne.

For patients with dental anxiety or those undergoing long, complex procedures, general anaesthesia is a godsend. Now, if you’re getting a procedure done under general anaesthesia, you might be wondering what it will feel like when you wake up. It is a common concern, and the good news is that with modern techniques, recovery is smoother than you might expect.

When you wake up, the first thing you will notice is that the procedure is already over. Most patients describe it as feeling like only a few seconds have passed, even if the procedure took an hour or more. You will likely feel a little drowsy, lightheaded, or groggy at first; however, this wears off gradually.

Now, you might also notice a dry mouth or a slightly sore throat, which is normal due to the breathing support used during the procedure. If you have had a wisdom tooth extraction, implant surgery, or another treatment, you may feel some numbness or mild discomfort, but we will have already given you pain relief to keep you comfortable longer.

Next, one of the most important things after waking up from general anaesthesia is having someone with you. You will not be able to drive home, and you may feel a little out of it for a few hours, so it is best to take it easy and rest for the remainder of the day.

We will also give you detailed aftercare instructions: when to take medication, what foods to eat, and how to manage swelling or discomfort. Most patients feel completely back to normal within 24 hours; however, it is always good to listen to your body and rest if needed.

So, if you are due for a dental treatment, but have been putting it off due to dental anxiety or even uncertainty surrounding modern solutions like general anaesthesia, we are happy to answer any questions. Simply DM us or call 1800 GENTLE, and we will make sure to help you feel comfortable and prepared for a smooth procedure and recovery.
