Will My Dental Veneers Fall Off?

Hi, I’m Dr James, one of the gentle dentists here at Dental House Group.

I saw one of our new patients, Michael, from Sunbury last Thursday. He is looking at upgrading his smile with Porcelain Veneers as he feels his teeth are too small. During his smile consultation, one of the questions he asked me was, Hey James, will my veneers fall off?

It is such a great question.. I thought it would be useful to make a video about this, just in case you are also thinking about upgrading your smile with porcelain veneers.

So, there are several reasons why dental veneers can fall off.

  • Firstly, veneers may fall off due to damage to your teeth. Teeth can become damaged if we are clenching or grinding our teeth as well as from the types of foods we consume. If this pressure is continuously placed on our veneers, they may chip or can become loose and fall off. We recommend to avoid eating hard things such as candy or ice.
  • Secondly, veneers may fall off due to physical trauma. In a similar way that natural teeth may break or fall out in an accident, veneers are no different and may fracture or fall off as well. In order to prevent this, we recommend wearing a mouthguard during any type of contact sport.
  • One of the most common reasons veneers might fall off is because they are old and may be due for replacement. The average lifespan of dental veneers is 10 to 15 years. However, this depends on many things like the type of material the veneers are made of, our habits and the way we look after them. Over time the glue that is used to hold the veneers in place may weaken and cause the veneers to detach from the teeth.
  • Another reason that may cause veneers to fall off is tooth decay, which can damage the underlying tooth holding the veneers in place. In a similar way that we look after our natural teeth, it is important to take excellent care of our oral hygiene before and after getting porcelain veneers to prevent tooth decay.
  • Finally, not all veneers are made equal. Dental veneers may fall off if poor techniques or materials are used. This will inevitably cause the glue holding the veneers in place to fail much more prematurely. Here at Dental House, we pride ourselves in providing the highest standard of care possible, and that means keeping up to date with the latest science-based approaches, using quality dental materials and the latest technology available.

Now, if your veneers do fall off, it’s not the end of the world. The first thing you should do is let us know and make sure to bring the veneer with you to your appointment. During our consultation we will need to work out why the veneer has fallen off in the first place so that when we fix it, we can make sure it doesn’t happen again.

So if you’re considering upgrading your smile with porcelain veneers, need to replace your veneers, want a second opinion about whether dental veneers are right for you, or have had a veneer come off, we would love to look after you.

Simply give us a call on 1800GENTLE, DM us in social media, or complete the form on our website, and we will help you organize your consultation. Bye for now.
