  4. Are There Any Potential Complications or Risks Associated With All-On-4 Implants?

Hi, I’m Dr. Fong, the founder and principal dentist of Dental House Group and AO4 Implants.

Today, we’ll go into a topic that’s crucial to discuss before you commit to any dental procedure, particularly something as significant as All-on-4 implants: “What are the potential complications or risks involved?”

Just this morning, I met with Andy, a new patient from Sunbury. Andy was excited about the All-on-4 procedure, but had read some negative results online and was naturally concerned.

He asked me, “Hey Fong, what are the potential complications or risks involved with All-on-4?” A very valid question, and one that I believe more people should be asking.

\

First of all, every surgical procedure comes with inherent risks, such as infection or adverse reactions to anesthesia. With All-on-4 dental implants, these general surgical risks apply as well. General surgical risks include infection, bleeding, pain, swelling and reactions to anesthesia. Some people also experience temporary bruising or discomfort after the procedure.

However, these risks are generally low, especially when you follow all the pre-operative and post-operative care instructions.

In some cases, the implants may not integrate well with the jawbone, leading to failure. This is relatively rare but is a possibility that should be discussed with your dental surgeon.

\

After the procedure, there can be instances of gum swelling, mild bleeding, or even nerve damage. Most of these issues are manageable but require immediate attention. Some patients may experience gum recession or inflammation. Again, following your dental care regimen can minimise these risks.

While complications are rare, they do exist. However, with proper care and regular dental check-ups, most issues can either be prevented or treated in a timely manner.

\

In the long run, poor oral hygiene can lead to peri-implantitis, a condition similar to gum disease but around the implant. This can cause bone loss and eventually, implant failure.

At the end of the day, prevention is crucial. Working with a highly experienced dental team with the latest technology, using premium materials, followed by excellent oral hygiene, and regular follow-up appointments to monitor the health of your implants can significantly minimise these risks.
