CEREC Same Day Crowns at Taylors Lakes, Keilor, & Sydenham
From Cracked Tooth to Final Crown in One Appointment
A traditional crown takes two visits with a couple of weeks in a temporary between them. CEREC compresses the process into a single appointment. Digital impressions, in-clinic milling, and a permanent ceramic crown fitted the same day. No putty impressions, no waiting, no temporary to manage.
The Technology Behind a Same Day Crown
CEREC stands for Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics. The system has three parts working together: a digital scanner that captures your tooth in detail, design software that maps the crown to your bite, and a milling unit that carves the crown from a solid ceramic block.
The scanner replaces traditional impression material, which means no tray full of putty and no waiting for it to set. The software lets us design the crown in front of you, adjusting the shape and fit before anything is milled. The mill then produces the finished crown while you wait, usually within 15 to 20 minutes.
The ceramic blocks come in a range of shades, so the crown is matched to your surrounding teeth at the design stage. Outcomes depend on the tooth being treated, your bite, and your home care.
Could a Same Day Crown Suit You?
CEREC is not the right call for every clinical situation. The patient profiles below are where it tends to fit best.
Your Same Day Crown Appointment
The whole process happens in one visit, usually within a single half-day. Here is how the appointment unfolds.

Examination and Preparation
The tooth is examined, and we discuss the recommended treatment plan, materials, and cost. If you agree to proceed, the tooth is numbed with local anaesthesia and prepared to receive the crown. (Approximately 30 to 45 minutes)

Digital Scanning
A handheld scanner captures the prepared tooth, the surrounding teeth, and your bite. The scan appears on screen in real time, with no impression material involved. (Approximately 10 to 15 minutes)

Crown Design
The crown is designed on the chairside software, with the shape, contour, and fit mapped to your specific tooth and bite. Adjustments are made before anything is milled. (Approximately 15 to 20 minutes)

In-Clinic Milling
The ceramic block, matched to your tooth shade, is loaded into the milling unit and the crown is carved out while you wait. You can step out, have a coffee, or stay in the chair. (Approximately 15 to 20 minutes)

Fitting and Bite Check
The crown is checked against your tooth for fit, contact with neighbouring teeth, and bite. Any small adjustments are made, then the crown is bonded permanently in place. (Approximately 30 to 45 minutes)

Aftercare and Review
You leave with home care instructions and a follow-up review scheduled. The crown is fully functional the same day, with no eating restrictions beyond the normal first few hours after local anaesthesia wears off.
Risks and Considerations
A CEREC crown is a routine restorative procedure, but it is fair to know what to expect.
Possible risks and considerations include:
- Mild tooth sensitivity in the days following the procedure, particularly to hot and cold
- The need for further treatment such as a root canal if the underlying tooth has more damage than initial imaging showed
- Discomfort around the gum line during the first few days as it settles around the new crown
- Crown fracture or wear over time, particularly in patients who grind or clench
- The crown becoming loose, requiring re-cementation
- The need to replace the crown eventually, as no restoration lasts forever
Recovery considerations:
- The local anaesthesia takes a few hours to wear off
- Sensitivity, if it occurs, usually settles within a few days to weeks
- A night guard may be recommended if you grind or clench, to protect the crown
- Normal brushing and flossing resume the same day
- Regular check-ups monitor the crown and the tooth underneath over time

Any questions?

How does CEREC compare to a traditional lab-made crown?
The end result is similar in form and function, but the path is different. A traditional crown involves an impression sent to a lab, a temporary crown worn for a couple of weeks, and a second visit for fitting. CEREC removes the lab step by milling the crown in-clinic, which means one visit instead of two and no temporary. Both options have their place, and we will explain which suits your specific tooth.
How long does the whole appointment take?
Most CEREC appointments run between 90 minutes and two hours from start to finish. The exact time depends on the tooth being treated, how much preparation is needed, and whether the milling unit is working on your crown while we attend to other parts of the appointment.
Are same-day crowns as strong and long-lasting as traditional crowns?
CEREC crowns are milled from solid ceramic blocks designed for long-term dental use. With proper care, regular check-ups, and protection against grinding or clenching where relevant, they are designed for years of function. Longevity depends on the tooth, your bite, and your home care routine.
