Dental Crowns & Bridges at Taylors Lakes, Keilor, & Sydenham

When a Filling Is Not Enough

A heavily damaged tooth that is not properly protected may eventually crack beyond repair. A missing tooth lets the neighbouring teeth drift, the bite shift, and the bone underneath shrink. Crowns rebuild what is weakened, and bridges fill what is no longer there. Both restore everyday function.

Understanding Dental Crowns & Bridges

A dental crown is a custom cap that covers a damaged tooth, restoring its shape, strength, and bite surface. Crowns are commonly used for teeth that are cracked, heavily filled, or root-treated.

A bridge replaces a missing tooth with a false tooth, anchored by crowns fitted to the teeth either side of the gap.

Both treatments take two visits across one to two weeks, with a temporary worn between them. Final restorations are made from porcelain, ceramic, or porcelain-fused-to-metal, chosen based on the tooth’s position and bite forces.

Could Crowns or Bridges Be Right for You?

At Taylors Lakes Dental House, we believe every patient deserves individual attention. Dental crowns or bridges may be suitable following our gentle, comprehensive assessment, though each case requires careful evaluation of tooth condition and treatment goals.

Damaged or Missing Teeth

You have a tooth that is cracked, heavily filled, or has been root-treated, or you have a missing tooth you would rather not leave as a gap. You want a fixed restoration rather than a removable option.

Adequate Supporting Structure

Enough healthy tooth remains for a crown to anchor to, or the teeth either side of your gap are strong enough to support a bridge. Your gums and general health are in reasonable shape.

Ongoing Restoration Care

You have realistic expectations about treatment outcomes and a commitment to brushing, flossing, and regular check-ups, since the long-term outcome of a crown or bridge depends as much on home care as the restoration itself.

Your Crowns & Bridges Journey

Whilst individual needs vary based on tooth condition and restoration type, here is what you can typically expect.

Your Comprehensive Assessment

Our team examines the tooth or gap, takes diagnostic imaging, and reviews your bite. The goal is to understand exactly what is happening with the tooth before recommending a path forward. (1 visit, approximately 45 to 60 minutes)

Treatment Planning and Preparation

We walk you through the recommended restoration, the material options, the timeline, and the cost. If a root canal, core build-up, or any other preparation is needed, this is the stage where it is mapped out. (Same visit, approximately 20 to 30 minutes)

Tooth Preparation

The tooth is numbed with local anaesthesia and carefully reshaped to receive the crown. For a bridge, the supporting teeth on either side of the gap are prepared in the same way. (1 visit, approximately 60 to 90 minutes per tooth)

Impressions and Temporary Restoration

Impressions or digital scans of the prepared teeth are taken, along with the shade. A temporary crown or bridge is fitted to protect the prepared teeth while the lab fabricates the final restoration. (Same visit, approximately 30 to 45 minutes)

Laboratory Fabrication Period

Skilled dental technicians fabricate your custom crown or bridge to the specifications recorded at your appointment, matching your bite and tooth shade. (1 to 2 weeks between appointments)

Final Restoration Placement

The temporary is removed and the final restoration is checked for fit, appearance, and bite. Once any small adjustments are made, the restoration is permanently cemented in place. (1 visit, approximately 45 to 60 minutes; ongoing 6-month reviews)

Risks & Recovery

Crowns and bridges restore damaged or missing teeth, but like any restorative treatment, they come with risks and recovery considerations.

Possible risks include:

  • Temporary sensitivity to hot or cold after the new restoration is fitted
  • Gum tenderness around the treated tooth while the area settles
  • Chipping, fracture, or loosening of the crown or bridge under heavy bite force
  • The need for further treatment such as a root canal if the underlying tooth becomes compromised
  • Decay forming at the edges of the restoration over time if home care is inconsistent

Recovery considerations:

  • Most patients return to normal activities the same day, once the local anaesthesia has worn off
  • Mild sensitivity usually settles within a few days to weeks
  • Avoiding very hard or sticky foods in the first week protects the new restoration
  • A night guard may be recommended if you grind or clench, to protect the restoration
  • Regular reviews and good oral hygiene are essential for long-term function

Any questions?

With proper care, crowns and bridges can last 10-15 years or longer. Individual longevity depends on factors including material choice, bite forces, oral hygiene habits, teeth grinding, and regular professional maintenance.

Modern dental ceramics and porcelains are designed to closely match natural tooth colour, translucency, and appearance. We work with skilled laboratory technicians to create restorations that blend naturally with your existing teeth.

Tooth preparation is performed under local anaesthesia, so discomfort during the procedure is minimal. Some sensitivity following preparation is normal and typically manageable with over-the-counter pain relief, resolving within several days.
