Periodontal Treatment at Taylors Lakes, Keilor, & Sydenham

When Gums Are Telling You Something

Bleeding when you brush. Tenderness along the gum line. Persistent bad breath. These are early signals of gum disease, an infection of the tissues supporting your teeth.

Left alone, the same infection can progress to bone loss and, eventually, tooth loss. Early intervention changes the trajectory.

How Periodontal Treatment Works

Periodontal treatment is the management of gum disease at its various stages, from early gingivitis through to advanced periodontitis.

Early-stage disease usually responds to professional cleaning above the gum line, paired with improved home care. Moderate to advanced disease often needs deeper cleaning below the gum line (scaling and root planing) to remove bacteria and calculus from the roots of the teeth.

Advanced cases may need surgical treatment to access deep pockets, regenerate lost bone, or graft tissue over exposed roots.

The aim across every stage is the same: reduce the bacterial load, calm the inflammation, and stop further damage. Outcomes depend on the stage at which treatment begins and your commitment to ongoing home care.

Could You Need Periodontal Treatment?

At Taylors Lakes Dental House, we believe every patient deserves individual attention. Periodontal treatment may be necessary following our comprehensive assessment if signs of gum disease are present.

Early Gum Disease Signs

Your gums bleed when brushing or flossing, appear red or swollen, or you have persistent bad breath despite good oral hygiene. These are signs of gingivitis, generally reversible with professional cleaning.

Moderate Gum Disease Symptoms

You have noticed gum recession, increased tooth sensitivity, deeper pockets along the gum line, or a slight looseness in one or more teeth. These suggest periodontitis, which needs more involved treatment than routine cleaning.

Advanced Gum Disease

You have significant recession, loose teeth, painful abscesses, pus along the gum line, or teeth that have started to shift. This is advanced periodontitis and needs urgent comprehensive treatment.

Your Treatment, Step by Step

Whilst individual needs vary based on disease severity and how you respond to treatment, here is the general shape of the process.

Your Comprehensive Assessment

Our team examines your gums, measures the depth of the pockets around each tooth, takes X-rays to assess bone levels, and determines the stage of disease. (1 visit, approximately 60 to 90 minutes)

Initial Treatment Planning

We explain the diagnosis, walk through the treatment options for your stage, set realistic expectations, and address any concerns about discomfort. (Same visit, approximately 20 to 30 minutes)

Cleaning or Scaling and Root Planing

Depending on severity, thorough cleaning is performed above the gum line, or deeper scaling and root planing below the gum line. Local anaesthesia is used for the deeper work. (1 to 4 visits, approximately 45 to 90 minutes per quadrant for deeper cleaning)

Surgical Treatment, If Required

Advanced cases may need surgical procedures to access deep pockets, remove infected tissue, regenerate bone, or graft gum tissue. Where this applies, it is planned in detail before going ahead. (Additional visits, timing varies)

Healing and Re-Evaluation

After 6 to 8 weeks, the pocket depths are reassessed, healing is checked, and we determine whether further treatment is needed or whether you are ready to move into maintenance. (Follow-up visit, approximately 45 to 60 minutes)

Ongoing Maintenance

Regular periodontal cleanings every 3 to 4 months, more frequent than routine check-ups, are essential to keep the disease from returning. (Ongoing appointments every 3 to 4 months)

Risks & Recovery

Periodontal treatment is generally well tolerated, but there are risks and recovery considerations to understand.

Possible risks include:

  • Tenderness and discomfort in the days following treatment
  • Minor bleeding during or after the procedure
  • Swelling or inflammation in the treated area
  • Increased tooth sensitivity, particularly to hot and cold
  • Gum recession that may become more visible as the inflammation resolves
  • Some teeth feeling looser short term as the gums tighten back to the tooth surface
  • Infection or delayed healing in rare cases
  • Disease recurrence if home care and maintenance visits are not kept up

Recovery considerations:

  • Discomfort usually settles within a few days
  • Soft foods are easier in the first day or two after deeper cleaning
  • Sensitivity may continue for a short period and generally decreases with time
  • Good home care is essential for long-term gum health
  • Maintenance appointments every 3 to 4 months are part of the treatment, not optional

Any questions?

Gum disease progresses through four stages. Gingivitis is the earliest stage, causing red, swollen gums that bleed easily when brushing. No bone loss has occurred and it’s reversible with professional cleaning. Early periodontitis involves gums pulling away from teeth, creating pockets where bacteria accumulate, with mild bone loss beginning.

Moderate periodontitis causes deeper pockets, more bone loss, and possible tooth mobility requiring intensive treatment. Advanced periodontitis results in severe bone loss, loose or shifting teeth, painful abscesses, and significant gum recession, with some teeth potentially unsaveable. Early intervention at any stage improves outcomes.

Most patients experience some discomfort during and after periodontal treatment, particularly deep cleaning procedures. We use local anaesthetic to minimise pain during treatment. Post-treatment sensitivity and soreness are common but manageable with medication. Advanced procedures involve more discomfort but sedation options are available for anxious patients.

Treatment duration depends on disease severity. Mild gingivitis may improve after one professional cleaning, whilst moderate to advanced periodontitis requires multiple appointments over several weeks or months. Deep cleaning is often performed in sections (quadrants) across 2-4 visits. Surgical treatment adds additional time for procedures and healing.
