Immediate Implants at Taylors Lakes, Keilor, & Sydenham
When the Old Tooth Has to Go
When a tooth is failing, fractured, or beyond saving, the traditional path is extraction, several months of healing, then a separate surgery for the implant. An immediate implant skips the wait by placing the post into the socket on the same day, often preserving more of the surrounding bone.
How Immediate Implants Work
Immediate implants follow the same overall structure as a standard implant, with one key difference in timing.
The failing tooth is removed carefully, with the surrounding bone and gum kept as intact as possible. The titanium post is then placed into the prepared socket during the same appointment, often with a small bone graft packed alongside it to support healing.
In some cases, a temporary tooth or crown is fitted on the day so you do not leave with a visible gap. The final crown follows months later, once the implant has fully integrated with the bone.
Not every tooth or every patient is suitable for immediate placement. The socket needs adequate bone, the surrounding tissue must be healthy, and there cannot be active infection in the area. The assessment determines whether immediate placement is the right call or whether a staged approach will give you a better long-term result.
Could Immediate Implants Suit You?
Immediate implants are not a default option. They suit specific situations where the timing and the tissue quality line up. The scenarios below come up most often.
Your Immediate Implant Journey
The timeline is shorter than a staged implant, but the steps still need to be followed carefully. Here is the shape of the process.

Comprehensive Consultation
We examine the failing tooth, take three-dimensional imaging, and look at the bone, gum, and bite. The goal is to determine whether immediate placement is suitable. (1 visit, approximately 60 minutes)

Treatment Plan
We walk you through the recommended approach, the timeline, the cost, and what to expect on the day. If immediate placement is not the right call, we explain why and what the alternative looks like. (Same visit or a follow-up)

Extraction and Implant Placement
The failing tooth is removed and the titanium implant is placed into the socket during the same appointment, under local anaesthesia. A small bone graft may be added, and a temporary tooth may be fitted. (1 visit, approximately 90 minutes to 2 hours)

Healing and Integration
The implant bonds with the bone over several months. A soft diet and careful oral hygiene protect the site during this phase. (3 to 6 months, with periodic reviews)

Final Crown
Once the implant has fully integrated, digital impressions are taken and a custom crown is made to match your surrounding teeth. It is then fitted securely to the implant. (2 to 3 visits across 2 to 3 weeks)

Long-Term Care
Regular check-ups, professional cleans, and good home care help keep the implant healthy over the long term. (Ongoing, typically every 6 months)
Risks & Recovery
Immediate implants carry the same risks as standard implants, plus a few that are specific to placing into a fresh extraction site.
Possible risks include:
- Swelling, bruising, and tenderness in the days after the procedure
- Bleeding during the first few days of healing
- Infection at the site, which is uncommon with good aftercare
- The implant failing to integrate with the bone, which is rare but can occur
- Gum recession around the implant over time, particularly in the front of the mouth
- The need for additional bone grafting if the socket does not preserve volume as expected
- Nerve or sinus involvement, which is why three-dimensional imaging is part of the plan
Recovery considerations:
- The first few days involve swelling and the need for soft foods
- Initial gum healing typically takes one to two weeks
- Full bone integration takes several months
- A temporary tooth, where fitted, needs gentle care to avoid loading the implant
- Regular reviews protect the long-term resul

Any questions?

Can a tooth really be extracted and an implant placed on the same day?
In many cases, yes. The key is whether the bone, gum, and overall site conditions are suitable. We assess this carefully before recommending immediate placement, and we will tell you honestly if a staged approach is the better option for your situation.
Will I leave the appointment with a tooth in place?
Sometimes, but not always. A temporary tooth or crown can be fitted on the day in some cases, particularly in the front of the mouth. In other cases, the area needs to heal undisturbed before any tooth is placed. We discuss this with you during the planning stage.
What if my failing tooth is infected?
Active infection generally rules out immediate placement, because the site needs to be clean for the implant to integrate. In those cases, we usually extract the tooth, treat the infection, allow the area to heal, and place the implant later.
