Teeth Whitening at Taylors Lakes, Keilor, & Sydenham

Not All Stains Are the Same
Teeth discolour for different reasons. Some staining is surface-level, picked up from coffee, tea, red wine, or smoking. Some is deeper, built into the tooth itself from age, certain medications, or trauma.
Whitening only addresses certain types of staining. A proper assessment determines whether it will work for your teeth.
What Whitening Actually Does
Professional teeth whitening uses a peroxide-based gel to lift staining from the tooth enamel. The gel breaks down stain molecules, lightening the visible shade of the teeth.
Whitening works best on natural tooth enamel. It does not change the colour of crowns, veneers, fillings, or other dental restorations, which can leave them mismatched with surrounding teeth after treatment.
Two formats are commonly used. In-clinic whitening applies a stronger gel during a single appointment. Take-home whitening uses custom-fitted trays and a milder gel worn over several weeks.
Individual outcomes vary based on the starting shade, the type of staining, your habits, and how well the result is maintained.
Is Whitening Right for You?
At Taylors Lakes Dental House, we believe every patient deserves individual attention. Whitening may be suitable following our gentle, comprehensive assessment, though each case requires careful evaluation of your teeth, gums, and the cause of your discolouration.
Two Paths to a Brighter Shade
Whilst the right approach depends on your teeth and your preference, here is how each option works.

Comprehensive Assessment
Our team examines your teeth and gums and confirms whether in-clinic whitening is appropriate for your situation. (1 visit, approximately 30 to 45 minutes)

Preparation
Your teeth are cleaned, the gums are protected with a barrier, and the whitening gel is applied to the front-facing surfaces of your teeth.

Treatment
The gel is left in place for set intervals, sometimes activated with a light, with the process repeated across the appointment. (Approximately 60 to 90 minutes total)

Aftercare
You leave with the result the same day, along with advice on managing sensitivity and avoiding strongly staining foods and drinks for the first 24 to 48 hours.
Risks & Recovery
Whitening is generally well tolerated, but it is fair to know what to expect.
Possible considerations include:
- Tooth sensitivity during and after treatment, particularly to cold
- Mild gum irritation if any whitening gel contacts the gums
- Uneven whitening across teeth, particularly where there is existing staining within the tooth or older restorations
- Crowns, veneers, and fillings do not change colour and may look darker by comparison after treatment
- The result is not permanent and shade rebounds gradually, particularly with continued staining habits
- Whitening is not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding
- Patients with significant decay, gum disease, or untreated dental issues need those addressed first
Aftercare considerations:
- Avoid strongly staining foods and drinks for the first 24 to 48 hours
- Coffee, tea, red wine, berries, and curry are the main shade-rebounding culprits long term
- Smoking continues to stain teeth and shortens the lifespan of the whitening result
- Touch-up treatments at home can extend the result, with timing varying between patients
- Regular check-ups and professional cleans help maintain the brightness

Any questions?

How long does the whitening result last?
Results vary between patients and depend largely on habits after treatment. Coffee, tea, red wine, and smoking gradually re-stain teeth. With careful habits and occasional touch-ups, the result can last for many months to a couple of years. With heavy staining habits, the rebound can happen sooner.
Is whitening safe?
Professional whitening, performed after a proper assessment, is generally safe for healthy teeth and gums. The most common side effect is temporary sensitivity to cold, which usually settles within a few days. Whitening is not recommended for patients with significant decay, gum disease, or during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
Should I choose in-clinic or take-home whitening?
It depends on your preference, your timeframe, and your teeth. In-clinic gives a result the same day but can cause more short-term sensitivity. Take-home is gentler and gradual, often producing a similar end result over a few weeks. We walk you through both at the consultation and recommend the one that suits your situation.
