Dental Anxiety Management at Taylors Lakes, Keilor, & Sydenham

A Common Reason for Avoiding the Dentist

Many patients put off dental care because the appointment itself feels overwhelming.

The longer treatment is delayed, the more involved it tends to be when patients return. Our team works with patients who want to step back into dental care at a pace that suits them.

What We Offer Anxious Patients

Patients who find dental visits stressful often benefit from a different pace and clearer communication. That is the starting point, regardless of what treatment is eventually needed.

The team takes time to explain what is happening before anything begins, breaks treatment into shorter visits where helpful, and uses agreed hand signals so patients can pause at any point.

For patients who would prefer a deeper level of comfort during treatment, we offer in-clinic options including nitrous oxide (also called happy gas), oral sedation, IV sedation, and general anaesthesia. The right option depends on the level of treatment, your medical history, and what you are comfortable with.

Each sedation option carries its own considerations, costs, and recovery picture. These are discussed in detail at the consultation, not assumed.

Could This Approach Suit You?

At Taylors Lakes Dental House, we welcome patients who find dental visits difficult. Our anxiety-aware approach may suit you if any of the situations below sound familiar.

You Have Been Putting Off Treatment

It has been months or years since your last visit because the thought of going has been too much. You know you need to come back but want a practice that will not rush you.

You Have Had a Difficult Past Experience

Something about a previous appointment has stayed with you. Maybe the pain, maybe the way it was handled, maybe both. You want a fresh start with a team that will listen first.

Specific Aspects of Treatment Concern You

Needles, the sound of the drill, or the feeling of being unable to speak during treatment are the most common triggers. We can talk through how each of these is addressed.

How a First Visit Unfolds

Whilst the right approach depends on you, here is the general shape of how anxious patients typically experience their first visit.

A Conversation First

Your appointment starts with a conversation, not the chair. We listen to your concerns, your history, and what has worked or not worked at previous practices. (Approximately 15 to 20 minutes)

Gentle Examination

Once you are ready, we examine your teeth and gums, taking the time to explain what we are looking at and pausing whenever you need. X-rays are taken only where clinically necessary. (Same visit, approximately 20 to 30 minutes)

Findings and Options

We walk through what we found, the treatment options available, and the pace that would suit you. Nothing is decided on the day unless you want to. (Same visit, approximately 15 to 20 minutes)

Sedation Discussion, If Relevant

Where sedation or general anaesthesia would help you get through treatment, we discuss the options, the risks, the costs, and what to expect. This may involve a separate consultation depending on the option chosen. (Separate visit if required)

Treatment at Your Pace

Treatment is broken into shorter or longer visits to suit you, with the techniques agreed at planning, such as hand signals to pause, headphones, or sedation. (Multiple visits as needed)

Ongoing Care

Once your immediate concerns are addressed, we work with you on a routine that keeps your oral health stable without long gaps that allow problems to develop again. (Regular visits, scheduling agreed with you)

Any questions?

You are far from the only one. Many of our patients come back after long gaps, often longer than they want to admit. We start with a conversation rather than treatment, and we go at the pace you set. No one is going to judge you for what has happened (or not happened) before.

The right option depends on the treatment involved, your medical history, and what level of awareness you would prefer during the appointment. We walk through the options at consultation, discuss the risks and recovery for each, and recommend the approach that suits your case. Some options need a separate planning visit.

For patients who find needles particularly difficult, we use topical anaesthetic to reduce the sensation, take time over the technique, and can incorporate sedation where appropriate. We discuss this openly at consultation so the approach is agreed before treatment begins.
