Children's Dentistry at Taylors Lakes, Keilor, & Sydenham

Start Early, Make It Routine

Children who visit the dentist regularly from a young age tend to view dental appointments as normal rather than something to dread.

Early visits also let us catch issues like decay or developmental concerns at the point where treatment is simplest, often involving prevention rather than repair.

What Children's Dentistry Covers

Children’s dentistry covers oral health care from the time the first baby tooth comes through, right through to the teenage years. The focus is preventive: regular check-ups, professional cleaning, fissure sealants on adult molars where appropriate, and fluoride application based on individual risk.

Each visit also looks at how the teeth are erupting, how the jaw is growing, and whether the bite is developing as expected. Early identification of orthodontic concerns can shape the timing of any treatment later on.

Visits include age-appropriate education on brushing and flossing, and practical guidance for parents on diet and habit management.

Our team uses the Tell, Show, Do approach to walk children through each step before anything happens, so they know what to expect and feel involved in the visit.

Could Your Child Be Due for a Visit?

At Taylors Lakes Dental House, we believe every child deserves age-appropriate dental care. Our paediatric care covers the situations below and more.

First Tooth, First Visit

Your child's first tooth has come through and you would like to establish a dental routine early. The first visit is gentle, brief, and designed to be a positive introduction.

Regular Check-Ups

Your child is due for their 6-monthly check-up, or it has been a while since the last visit. Routine care keeps small issues from becoming bigger ones.

You Have Noticed Something

A tooth looks discoloured, your child has mentioned a sore tooth, or you have spotted what might be early decay. Catching it early gives more treatment options.

How a Children's Visit Unfolds

Whilst individual needs vary based on age and what is happening with the teeth, here is the general shape of a children's visit.

A Comfortable Introduction

Our team welcomes your child, shows them the chair, and explains what each instrument does in language they understand. For first-time visits, this might include a ride in the chair and a look at the bright light. (1 visit, approximately 30 to 45 minutes)

Examination and Growth Monitoring

We examine the teeth, gums, and surrounding tissues, check how the teeth are erupting, and assess jaw growth and bite development. Digital X-rays are used only when clinically appropriate for the age and concern. (Same visit, additional 10 to 15 minutes)

Preventive Care

A professional clean and polish removes plaque and surface stains. Fissure sealants may be applied to adult molars where appropriate, and fluoride application is offered based on individual risk. (Same visit, approximately 30 to 45 minutes)

Education for Both of You

Age-appropriate brushing and flossing instruction for your child, alongside practical guidance for you on diet, habits, and what to watch for between visits. (Same visit, approximately 15 to 20 minutes)

Treatment Where Needed

If something needs attention, we explain what is involved and use child-friendly techniques. Local anaesthesia is used where required, and the experience is paced to your child's comfort. (Additional visits as needed, timing varies)

Looking Ahead

Regular monitoring of development, early identification of orthodontic concerns, and a plan for upcoming milestones such as adult teeth, wisdom teeth, or orthodontic planning. (Ongoing visits, typically every 6 months)

Any questions?

We recommend coming in around the time the first tooth appears. Early visits help build positive associations with the dental environment and let us keep an eye on development from the start. That said, timing varies between children, and if you’re unsure, just give us a call and we’ll help you work out the right time.

The Tell, Show, Do approach gives children a clear understanding of each step before anything happens. They can hold a mirror to watch, raise their hand to pause, and take the visit at their own pace. Parents are welcome to stay in the room, and difficult treatment can be split across multiple shorter visits where needed.

Reading age-appropriate dental books together, talking about the visit positively, and arriving with time to spare so your child can settle in all help. Avoid using the dentist as a threat or framing it as something to be afraid of. Children pick up on parent attitudes, so a calm, matter-of-fact approach generally works best.
