Orthodontics at Taylors Lakes, Keilor, & Sydenham

More Than Just Straighter Teeth

Misaligned teeth affect how your bite functions, how easily you can clean them, and how the jaw joints carry the load.

Orthodontic treatment gradually moves teeth into a better position to address both health and appearance concerns at the same time.

How Orthodontic Treatment Works

Orthodontics uses controlled, light pressure over time to move teeth into a planned position. The bone around each tooth adapts to the movement, allowing the tooth to settle in its new position.

Two main approaches are available. Traditional fixed braces use brackets bonded to the teeth, connected by wires that are adjusted periodically. Clear aligners (such as Invisalign®) use a series of custom-fitted trays, each worn for one to two weeks, that gradually shift the teeth.

Some cases respond well to either option. Others are better suited to one approach over the other, depending on the type of movement required.

Treatment length depends on the complexity of the case, ranging from several months for minor changes to two or more years for full bite correction. Retainers are required afterwards to hold the result.

Could Orthodontics Be Right for You?

At Taylors Lakes Dental House, we believe every patient deserves individual attention. Orthodontic treatment may be suitable following our comprehensive assessment, though each case requires careful evaluation of your teeth, bite, and goals.

Crooked or Crowded Teeth

Your teeth overlap, twist, or sit so close together that cleaning between them is difficult. Crowded teeth carry a higher risk of decay and gum issues over time.

Gaps or Spacing Concerns

You have visible gaps between teeth or spacing that affects how your teeth meet when biting. Some gaps are cosmetic, others affect function.

Bite Problems

You have an overbite, underbite, crossbite, or open bite. Bite issues can cause uneven tooth wear, jaw discomfort, and difficulty chewing.

Your Treatment, Step by Step

Whilst individual needs vary based on the type of treatment and the complexity of the case, here is the general shape of the process.

Your Comprehensive Assessment

We examine your teeth and bite, take X-rays, photographs, and digital scans, and discuss what you would like to change. The assessment determines which treatment approach suits your case. (1 visit, approximately 60 to 90 minutes)

Treatment Planning

We walk you through the recommended option (braces, aligners, or a combination), the expected duration, the cost, and the trade-offs of each path. You see the projected outcome before committing. (Same or follow-up visit, approximately 45 to 60 minutes)

Starting Treatment

For braces, the brackets are bonded to the teeth and the wires are placed. For aligners, custom trays are fabricated and the first sets are fitted with instructions for wear and care. (1 to 2 visits, approximately 90 to 120 minutes for braces fitting)

Regular Adjustments

Every 4 to 8 weeks, the wires are adjusted (for braces) or the next aligner set is provided (for aligners). Progress is monitored and any concerns addressed. (Ongoing throughout treatment, approximately 20 to 30 minutes each)

Treatment Completion

Once the teeth have reached the planned position, the braces are removed or aligner treatment concludes. The teeth are cleaned and polished, and the final alignment is checked. (1 visit, approximately 60 to 90 minutes for braces removal)

Retainer Phase

Custom retainers are fitted to hold the result. Wear is typically full-time initially, then night-only long-term. Without retainers, teeth tend to drift back over time. (Initial fitting, then periodic check-ups)

Any questions?

Treatment length varies significantly based on the complexity of the case and the method chosen. Simpler cases may complete in 6 to 12 months. Moderate cases typically take 18 to 24 months. More complex cases involving significant crowding or bite correction may take 2 to 3 years or longer. The estimated timeline is provided at planning and reviewed throughout treatment.

Most patients experience some discomfort during and after periodontal treatment, particularly deep cleaning procedures. We use local anaesthetic to minimise pain during treatment. Post-treatment sensitivity and soreness are common but manageable with medication. Advanced procedures involve more discomfort but sedation options are available for anxious patients.

Teeth tend to drift back towards their original position over time. Without consistent retainer wear, this can undo months or years of treatment. Some shifting can happen within weeks. Other movement occurs gradually over months or years. Retreatment may be needed if significant relapse occurs, adding time and cost. Retainers are not optional.
