Invisalign® at Taylors Lakes, Keilor, & Sydenham

Straightening, Without the Brackets
Adult patients increasingly look for orthodontic options that fit into work, social, and everyday life. Invisalign® uses a series of custom-made clear aligners that gradually move teeth into a planned position, without the visible brackets and wires of traditional braces.
How Clear Aligner Treatment Works
Invisalign® treatment uses a sequence of custom-fit aligners made from medical-grade plastic. Each aligner is worn for one to two weeks, then swapped for the next in the series.
Each new aligner moves the teeth slightly closer to the planned position. The full sequence is mapped out before treatment begins, using digital scans of your teeth and 3D treatment planning software.
Aligners are removable for eating, drinking, and brushing. Most patients are advised to wear them 20 to 22 hours per day for the treatment to progress as planned.
Treatment length varies based on the complexity of the case. Individual outcomes depend on aligner wear time, bite, and overall oral health.
Could Aligners Be the Right Choice?
At Taylors Lakes Dental House, we believe every patient deserves individual attention. Invisalign® may be suitable following our gentle, comprehensive assessment, though each case requires careful evaluation of your teeth, bite, and treatment goals.
Your Aligner Treatment, Step by Step
Whilst treatment length varies based on case complexity, here is the general shape of the process.

Your Comprehensive Assessment
We examine your teeth, take photographs and digital scans, and discuss what you would like to change. The scans show your teeth in 3D, which forms the basis of the treatment plan. (1 visit, approximately 45 to 60 minutes)

Treatment Plan and Preview
We use Invisalign® planning software to map out how the teeth will move across the treatment, then walk you through the projected outcome, the timeline, and the cost. You see the plan before committing. (Same visit or a follow-up)

Aligner Fabrication
The custom aligners are fabricated by Invisalign® and shipped to the practice. (Approximately 3 to 6 weeks)

Fitting and Routine Setup
Your first aligners are fitted, small composite attachments may be placed on certain teeth to help guide the movement, and we walk you through the daily routine: wear time, switching aligners, cleaning, and eating. (1 visit, approximately 45 to 60 minutes)

Progress Reviews
Short review appointments check the teeth are moving as planned and provide the next batch of aligners. Adjustments to the plan can be made if needed. (Every 6 to 10 weeks across the treatment)

Retention Phase
Once the planned movement is complete, retainers are fitted to hold the teeth in their new position. Retainers are essential, as teeth tend to shift back without them. (Ongoing wear, typically nightly long-term)
What You Need to Know
Clear aligner treatment is generally well tolerated, but there are practical considerations to be aware of.
Important considerations include:
- Mild discomfort or pressure for a day or two when starting each new aligner, as the teeth begin to move
- Temporary changes to speech for the first few days, particularly slight lisping
- Small composite attachments may be placed on certain teeth to help guide movement, and removed at the end of treatment
- Inconsistent wear extends the treatment time or compromises the planned outcome
- Some cases are still better treated with traditional braces, and the assessment determines this
- Retainers are required long-term to hold the result. Without retainers, teeth tend to shift back over time
- Existing dental work such as crowns or implants may affect the planning process
Practical considerations:
- Aligners are removed for eating and drinking anything other than water
- Teeth must be brushed before aligners go back in to prevent decay
- Aligners are cleaned daily using a soft brush and water
- Smoking can stain the aligners
- Lost or broken aligners are replaced, but may delay progress

Any questions?

How long does Invisalign® treatment usually take?
Treatment length depends on the complexity of the case. Simpler cases may complete in around six months, while more complex cases can take 18 months or longer. Your treatment plan gives you an estimated timeline at the start, and progress is reviewed regularly.
Will I need to wear retainers afterwards?
Yes. Retainers are an essential part of any orthodontic treatment, including Invisalign®. Without them, teeth tend to drift back towards their original position over time. Most patients wear retainers nightly for the long term to hold the result.
Can I get Invisalign® if I have crowns, fillings, or implants?
In many cases, yes. Existing dental work is factored into the treatment plan from the start. Implants do not move during orthodontic treatment, so any planning has to account for them. The assessment confirms whether your current dental work allows aligner treatment to proceed.
