General Examination and Hygiene at Taylors Lakes, Keilor, & Sydenham

Catching Things Before They Cost You
Most dental problems start small. A spot of decay between teeth, a slight inflammation along the gum line, a hairline crack in an old filling.
Caught early, these are quick and inexpensive to fix. Left to grow, the same issues often turn into root canals, crowns, or extractions. Regular check-ups change the trajectory.
What Happens at a Check-Up
A general examination is a comprehensive review of your teeth, gums, and oral tissues. We look for decay between and beneath teeth, signs of gum disease, worn enamel, cracked or failing restorations, and any tissue changes that need a closer look.
X-rays are used periodically to see what cannot be seen by eye, particularly decay between teeth and changes in the bone supporting the teeth.
Professional cleaning (often called a scale and clean) removes hardened plaque (calculus or tartar) that brushing and flossing alone cannot reach. Cleaning is done above and below the gum line where bacteria tend to settle.
A typical check-up and clean takes 45 to 60 minutes. Most patients are seen every 6 months, though some need more frequent visits based on individual risk factors.
Could a Check-Up Be Right for You?
At Taylors Lakes Dental House, we believe every patient deserves individual attention. Regular examinations and professional cleanings support oral health and help catch problems before they become significant.
How a Visit Unfolds
Whilst individual needs vary based on your oral health, here is what you can typically expect at a check-up and clean.

Comprehensive Examination
Our team reviews your medical and dental history, examines your teeth and gums for decay and disease, checks existing restorations, and takes X-rays where needed to see between teeth and under fillings. (Every 6 to 12 months, approximately 30 to 45 minutes)

Oral Cancer Screening
We examine your tongue, cheeks, throat, and neck for any unusual lumps, sores, or changes that may need further investigation. This is part of every comprehensive check-up. (Part of the examination, approximately 5 minutes)

Professional Cleaning (Scale)
Specialised instruments remove hardened plaque and calculus from the tooth surfaces and below the gum line, where regular brushing cannot reach. (Same visit, approximately 20 to 30 minutes)

Polishing
A polishing paste is used to lift surface stains and remove any remaining soft plaque, finishing the surface smooth. (Same visit, approximately 10 minutes)

Findings and Recommendations
We walk through what we found, including any areas to watch and any treatment recommended, with cost and timing where applicable. (Same visit, approximately 10 to 15 minutes)

Home Care Advice
We provide tailored guidance on brushing technique, flossing, interdental brushes, and any products that suit your needs, helping you maintain results between visits. (Same visit, approximately 5 minutes)

Invest in Your Oral Health
Any questions?

How often should I have a check-up?
Most patients benefit from a check-up and clean every 6 months. Patients with gum disease, higher decay risk, diabetes, or other risk factors may need visits every 3 to 4 months. The right frequency for you is recommended at your appointment based on your individual oral health.
If I brush well, do I still need a professional clean?
Yes. Even with thorough home care, most people develop some hardened calculus that cannot be removed by brushing or flossing. Professional cleaning removes these deposits before they cause decay or gum issues, and check-ups also catch problems that develop between visits.
Will the cleaning damage my teeth?
No. Professional cleaning carried out with proper technique does not damage enamel. Some patients experience temporary sensitivity afterwards, particularly when significant calculus is removed and previously covered tooth surfaces are exposed. This usually settles within a few days.
